What is Plasma?
Plasma is the straw-colored liquid portion of your blood. It contains thousands of proteins, which carry out critical functions, such as antibodies to fight diseases and clotting factors to regulate bleeding. Medicines created from plasma are critical for individuals living with chronic and rare health conditions, like primary immunodeficiency, Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, hereditary angioedema, acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (also known as Guillain-Barré syndrome), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), and bleeding disorders. Plasma-derived medicines can also reduce complications associated with pregnancy, play a supportive role in cancer care, protect against infections like tetanus, replenish lost fluids in burn patients, and prevent excess blood loss during shock and trauma.

Real Life Impact
Because plasma cannot be artificially reproduced, patients rely on donations from thousands of healthy individuals. For example:
Hemophilia A
One patient needs 1,200 plasma donations every year.
Primary Immunodeficiency Disease
One patient needs 130 plasma donations every year.
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
One patient needs 900 donations every year.
