Every year, the first week of October shines a global spotlight on International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW), a time to recognize the life-saving impact of plasma donations and the medicines derived from them. This week reminded us that plasma is irreplaceable. It cannot be made in a lab, and millions of people rely on it every day to survive.
Why plasma is critical
Plasma-derived medicines touch countless lives. They are life-changing and life-saving for individuals living with complex and rare conditions, including primary immunodeficiency diseases, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, hereditary angioedema, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, Kawasaki disease, and more. Plasma also plays a vital role in emergency and surgical care, supporting clotting and immune functions that save lives in critical moments.
Yet awareness lags behind its importance. A recent survey found that 72% of Americans agree plasma-derived medicines save lives, but most have never donated plasma. That gap shows just how much work remains to educate the public and encourage donation.
Celebrating plasma heroes in California
Here in California, our coalition celebrated IPAW 2025 by sharing powerful, real-life stories that illustrate the impact of plasma donations and plasma-derived medicines. Through the launch of our CalPlasma Ambassadors page, we showcase inspiring individuals who are driving awareness supporting patients, and advocating for access to plasma-derived medicines across the state.
IPAW may be over, but our work isn't! Get involved
While IPAW 2025 may have concluded, the need for plasma donations and awareness continues year-round. If you are interested in making an impact, PlasmaWeek.org offers a wealth of resources to help you join the conversation, become an advocate, and find donation centers near you.
