CalPlasma Applauds Governor Newsom for Enacting Patient-Centered Plasma Legislation

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – CalPlasma issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom signing Assembly Bill 2009, legislation authored by Assemblymember Phillip Chen (R-Yorba Linda) and Assemblymember José Luis Solache (D-Lynwood):

“CalPlasma applauds Governor Newsom for signing AB 2009 into law. The legislation will modernize our state’s plasma ecosystem and improve access to plasma-derived medicines – life-saving treatments relied on by thousands of Californians living with rare and complex conditions. 

“Californians across the state depend on plasma-derived medicines to manage a wide range of serious and often life-threatening conditions, including bleeding disorders, immune deficiencies, hereditary angioedema, respiratory illnesses, and neurological diseases. Beyond these core uses, plasma-derived medicines help reduce pregnancy-related complications, support cancer treatment, protect against infections such as tetanus or rabies, restore fluid levels in burn patients, and prevent excessive blood loss during trauma and shock. In emergency and intensive care settings, the treatments are indispensable, providing rapid stabilization when every moment counts. 

“Timely access to treatment starts with a reliable supply of plasma. AB 2009 is an important step toward strengthening California’s plasma ecosystem and ensuring our regulatory framework keeps pace with the needs of patients and modern plasma collection.
